Apostle of the Laity, Philip begins to evangelizeBeing of the Laity and never feeling worthy to be a priest, Philip Neri desired nothing but to serve as a lay man. He had been preaching in the hospitals, then on the street corners waiting for the office workers to leave for lunch or home. He would speak to them, instruct them with the true teachings of the Church. He taught with such love, such fire that more and more came, and stayed longer and longer, until they began following him, visiting the poor and the infirmed; and the Confraternity of the Laity was formed! The Confraternity was not only filled with these young people, now on fire for the Faith, but with the nobility.The Apostolate took on the care of poor pilgrims coming to Rome for the Holy Year. Since most of them arrived sick, tired, without much to eat, having walked hundreds of miles under the worst conditions, they had need not only of a place to stay, but often a hospital. Saint Philip and his Confraternity set up the first pilgrims' houses in Rome, where they could stay a short time, convalesce or receive more intensive hospital care.

Philip Neri, Il santo amabile, the loveable saint, lived in the most important century for the history of the Catholic faith, and even the modern world. Yet he didn't factor into the great events of that century, albeit he was close to many of the great men active in that age, such as St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Charles Borromeo, St. Pius V, and many other saints and popes.Yet, the reform of the Church or the city of Rome, as well as of the Roman Curia would have been unimaginable were it not for the sanctity of Philip Neri and his great apostolate in Rome.From humble origins, Philip began a life of devotion and prayer, and embodied the expression of St. Paul to "Pray without ceasing." Raised to the priesthood, he began the direction of penitents, fearing neither to approach the poor, tradesmen, nobles or cardinals, and to give them great penances to focus their devotion on Jesus Christ. Sometimes reading these penances, one would scratch their head thinking that this is crazy, yet Philip could read souls and had the gift of prophecy, and he knew exactly how to direct his penitents. He gathered great men to himself, such as Cardinal Baronius, who, living with Philip for a number of years, inspired him to found the Congregation of the Oratory, which can still be found today in man...

The Life of St. Philip Neri by Fr. Pietro Giacomo Bacci was published in 1622, just 27 years after St. Philip’s death in 1595. Fr. Bacci was a member of the Roman Oratory, the Congregation founded by St. Philip, and he based his book on the Processes instituted for St. Philip's canonization. These Processes began just two months after Philip’s death and depended on sworn testimony from hundreds of witnesses to Philip’s extraordinary virtue and his many miracles. The Processes led to Philip’s beatification in 1615 and ultimately his canonization in 1622.While there have been many books written on St. Philip Neri, Fr. Bacci's book is a classic that has been translated into many languages and republished numerous times in the hundreds of years since St. Philip's death.This edition of The Life of St. Philip Neri is based on the 1902 revised edition of Fr.
